Here is an example of how SAL efficiently proceeds with a software developing company’s localization project.

A project manager (PM) who needs information on localization and resources contacts SAL. We set a date and an agenda for our first meeting.

The client PM and a SAL consultant cooperate in examining the original software product and verify the necessary tasks for its localization.

Main topics of consultation include:

• The purpose and target of localization. Verify any functions that may require localization.
• What resource files and documents require translating.
• Current extent of localization of the software.
• Is there a preceding version with a reusable translation.
• What level of localization QA is required (translation only, or both translation and functionality).
• Client’s budget and requested delivery schedule, etc.

Based on the information agreed upon at the first meeting, SAL will arrange an inventory of requested services and propose a delivery schedule as well as an estimate of costs. This proposal will be presented to the client PM. The project will commence as soon as the client PM approves our proposal and written estimate.

The individual tasks of translation and localization QA specified in the approved plan are carried out as proposed. In addition to basic translation and functionality testing, some of the following may be accomplished as required:

• Communicating with the client’s product development staff as necessary.
• Visiting the client’s place of business to work on quality QA and resource files built into the product, or to hold meetings with the client PM.

(Note: It is strongly recommended that the original product development team, or at least a part of the team, is technologically committed during the localization process. This is because ordinarily it is not enough to just translate a product. In order to accurately localize the product to meet the demands of the Japanese market, the product design may require some modifications.)

When the product that has passed the translation and localization QA process is completed, SAL prepares a project report, which is delivered to the client PM. Once the PM acknowledges receipt of all the promised work, and confirms project completion, the client will be billed for SAL’s services.
